The political landscape is ablaze with outrage following Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman’s contentious remarks about Rajput ruler Rana Sanga. The controversy spilled into the Rajasthan Assembly on Monday, sparking heated exchanges between BJP and Congress legislators.
Some activists accessed the premises using the back door and caused havoc by breaking windows, defacing furniture, and smashing the cars. But the police lathi charged to disperse the crowd, and an extreme fight broke out. Security has tightened around Suman’s house.
BJP Demands Action, Congress Faces Backlash
BJP MLA Shrichand Kriplani demanded immediate action against the Rajya Sabha MP for his alleged disrespectful comments. When Congress MLA Harimohan Sharma argued that the House could not debate a Rajya Sabha member’s statement, BJP lawmakers erupted in protest. They questioned why the legacy of Rana Sanga, the 16th-century Mewar ruler and grandfather of Maharana Pratap, should not be defended.
Accusing the Congress of endorsing the offensive remarks, Kriplani declared, “Your silence proves you stand with Ramji Lal Suman. The Congress has revealed its true colors—you are siding with those who insult our history.” Government Chief Whip Jogeshwar Garg echoed the sentiment, alleging that the Congress was defending Suman’s disrespect toward the Rajput icon.
Reason for the controversy: Rana Sanga Controversy
The uproar traces back to Ramji Suman’s statement in the Rajya Sabha last Friday, where he criticized the BJP’s rhetoric on Babur’s legacy. He argued, “The BJP keeps repeating that they carry Babur’s DNA. But who invited Babur to India? It was Rana Sanga who sought his help to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. If Muslims are called Babur’s descendants, then you are the heirs of the ‘traitor’ Rana Sanga.”
Who Was Rana Sanga?
Maharana Sangram Singh, popularly known as Rana Sanga, was a legendary Rajput ruler of Mewar (Udaipur). The youngest son of Rana Raimal, he ascended the throne in 1509 and ruled until 1528. Under his leadership, Mewar expanded its dominance, uniting Rajputs against foreign invasions.
A fearless warrior, Rana Sanga fiercely resisted Mughal expansion, earning a reputation as one of the most powerful kings of his era. His legacy remains deeply revered in Rajasthan’s history, making any perceived insult a volatile political issue.
