Inside the hostel, on a particular night, a fellow student was subjected to physical and mental torture by a group of students. The video that surfaced later on social media shows nothing but barbaric treatment meted out to the victim. The incident incensed many netizens, resulting in swift action from police.
The most horrifying fact is that there was no supervision during the incident. Reports suggest that there were no wardens or security guards in the hostel during the night, hence exposing students to such violence. Rumours about the possible deletion of CCTV footage have raised further suspicion about a cover-up.
Hostel manager claims to be unaware of the incident
The police visited the hostel promptly to collect evidence and record the statements of the administrator, other staff, and students. On the other hand, the District Education Officer (DEO) has treated the matter seriously. A show-cause notice has been issued to the hostel management asking for an explanation for the negligent supervision and safety procedures.
In a landmark decision, the five students involved in the dastardly acts have been suspended from the hostel, and their admissions have been canceled. The hostel administrator, meanwhile, professed the institution’s ignorance towards these happenings, raising further doubts regarding its commitment to the welfare of its students.

This is not an isolated incident. Even more appalling, similar ragging and bullying cases have been reported in this very hostel in the past. Yet, even after numerous complaints from the parents, the administration has failed to step up for the cause of students. In former incidents, parents levied police complaints, but those were either washed down or brushed beneath the carpet.
The lack of a warden and security staff during critical hours and a possible deletion of CCTV footage indicate that a systematic failure in the hostel management has taken place. It is high time that educational institutions put students’ safety and well-being above everything else.
